Finishes

Broom finish or washed aggregate

The finish is decided in the last hour of the pour and you live with it for twenty years. Here is what each one is, what it costs you in practice and where each one belongs.

Finish 01

Broom finish

The workhorse finish, and the one most Memphis driveways and walkways get.

  • A stiff broom is drawn across the surface while it is still setting.
  • Leaves a fine ridged texture that gives grip when the concrete is wet.
  • Hard wearing, easy to clean, and the most cost effective finish we offer.
  • Best for driveways, walkways, patios, steps and side yards.

Finish 02

Washed exposed aggregate

The decorative finish, where the stone in the mix becomes the surface.

  • The cement paste is washed off at exactly the right moment to expose the stone.
  • Gives a textured, grippy, cooler surface with far more character than grey slab.
  • Hides marks and traffic better than a smooth finish.
  • Best for pool decks, feature driveways and front entries.

FAQ

Choosing a finish

Which finish should I choose for a driveway?

Broom finish for most driveways. It is hard wearing, it grips when wet, it is the most cost effective option and it is what the majority of Memphis driveways have. Choose washed aggregate when you want the driveway to be a feature.

Is washed exposed aggregate more expensive?

Yes, it costs more than a broom finish because it takes more material selection and much more skill and timing on the day. Washing too early ruins the surface, washing too late means the stone never shows. We will price both for you.

Does a broom finish wear smooth over time?

The texture softens over many years of traffic, especially in the wheel tracks, but a properly finished broom surface keeps its grip for a long time. Depth of the broom pass and the timing of it are what decide that.

Can I have different finishes in one job?

Yes. A common combination is a broom finish driveway with a washed aggregate front walk, so the entry reads as the feature and the driveway stays practical.
